PRWeek Awards honor industry at large

Posted March 10, 2009

More often than not, PR pros redirect the spotlight away from their own achievements and onto their clients’ successes. Occupational hazard aside, the 2009 PRWeek Awards provided PR pros with the opportunity to put their own accomplishments front and center and celebrate an industry’s overall excellence. During my second Awards, it was a real pleasure to hear the enthusiastic applause for agencies in the midst of challenging (and highly scrutinized) projects, like Fleishman Hillard’s win for assisting with Bumble Bee Foods’ Castleberry’s National Food Recall, or small agencies, like Dig Communications, be lauded in their own right. Above all, what the the 2009 Awards did best was showcase the value created by all the nominated agencies, win or lose, and the industry at large.

IPG to cut less staff than reported, says source

Posted December 19, 2008

Holding company Interpublic Group (IPG) is in the process of cutting considerably fewer positions than the 2,000 reported December 19 by The Guardian, a source familiar with the proceedings told PRWeek.

Asked if the number of 2,000 reported job cuts was accurate, the source replied, “That’s a really high number, and I would not expect it to be there,” adding that the company has “less work to do than Omnicom” on staff reductions. Omnicom announced December 18 that it will lay off “less than 5% of the total workforce numbers,” affecting “some, but not all” of its companies. Executives at Omnicom’s PR firms, including Fleishman-Hillard and Ketchum, said they do not have major staff layoffs in the works.

The source added that it has not yet been determined whether the job reductions will take place within the company’s Constituency Management Group (CMG) division, which contains its PR agencies, or the more advertising-focused Integrated Agency Network.

IPG’s PR business includes Weber Shandwick, GolinHarris, MWW Group, DeVries, and Carmichael Lynch Spong.

Lights, Camera, PR Action

Posted September 16, 2008

While in Los Angeles last week for PRWeek’s Entertainment and Media Roundtable, I also attended a PRWeek panel, discussing PR in the entertainment industry. The panel, moderated by PRWeek’s Keith O’Brien, included Susan Fleishman, EVP of corporate communications for Warner Bros; Chris Ender, SVP of communications for CBS; and David Stamper, SVP, partner, and GM of Fleishman-Hillard Los Angeles. A recap of the panel is after the jump.

PRWeek hosts Consumer Panel in Chicago

Posted July 15, 2008

PRWeek hosted its annual Consumer Roundtable, last Thursday, in Chicago, along with a panel discussion featuring Audrey Reed-Granger, director of PR and marketing, mass brand portfolio at Whirlpool; Jeff Davis, SVP and partner at ; and Julian Green, senior media relations manager at MillerCoors, and moderated by PRWeek’s Erica Iacono. The panel event was sponsored by Fleishman-Hillard.

Iacono led discussion on the direction of integrated branding in the face of the rising costs of consumer goods, PR professionals’ increasing share of the marketing mix with the slashing of advertising budgets, and the shift in agencies having more strategic relationships with their clients.

The panelists raised several interesting points. Reed-Granger commented that business is down overall, and that she knows when advertising is being cut at her company, because her phone starts to ring. Green explained how Miller beer is thriving in the current soft economy due in part to the High Life spokesman campaign. And, Davis’ assessed that PR professionals are continuing to work hard to provide steady service, despite the setbacks of the economy.

PR in the wake of California’s gay marriage decision

Posted May 21, 2008

I’ve been working on an article about the California Supreme Court’s Decision that overturned a ban on same-sex marriages in the state. The final article will be in PRWeek on Monday and will be online then too, but in the meantime, after the jump, read a few tidbits that didn’t make it into the article, but are very interesting.
