LA ports comms remain active in downturn

Posted December 19, 2008

The Port of Los Angeles is working to explain to the public and policymakers its continued activities during a downturn. An in the Los Angeles Times on December 15 took a look at the projects coming to fruition at the Port of Los Angeles and the criticisms the Port is facing because of its spending on such projects during a down economy. “The projects at both ports [Los Angeles and Long Beach] are being fought by environmentalists and neighbors concerned about premature deaths and a higher incidence of asthma,” the article said.

Arley Baker, senior director of communications and legislative affairs for the Port of Los Angeles, said the PR has focused on working with Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and becoming a part of the public and political commentary about the situation. “By advancing those projects we continue to be an economic engine in this down economy,” he told PRWeek via e-mail. ”On the other hand, we are a municipal business, our revenues are down and our resources are finite.”

The Port had hired a PR firm to help with its Clean Truck Program earlier this year, but the current media relations has mostly fallen to internal staff, Baker said.

LA has more train trouble

Posted September 22, 2008

A light rail train ran into a bus in downtown Los Angeles on Friday morning, the second accident involving public transportation in the city in a week. Fourteen people were injured, none seriously, including the operator of the train, the Associated Press .

“We had an out-of-service bus turn in front of the train,” Marc Littman, a spokesman for the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA), told the AP. “We don’t know who had the right of way.”

Both the bus and the train are operated by the MTA.

Lights, Camera, PR Action

Posted September 16, 2008

While in Los Angeles last week for PRWeek’s Entertainment and Media Roundtable, I also attended a PRWeek panel, discussing PR in the entertainment industry. The panel, moderated by PRWeek’s Keith O’Brien, included Susan Fleishman, EVP of corporate communications for Warner Bros; Chris Ender, SVP of communications for CBS; and David Stamper, SVP, partner, and GM of Fleishman-Hillard Los Angeles. A recap of the panel is after the jump.

I Want Media published a Q&A with Jack Dorsey, Twitter co-founder and CEO on Monday.

Among its highlights, Dorsey, who says that Barack Obama is his most high-profile user, comments that he doesn’t believe his free service will ever replace blogging or traditional journalism, but complements them well.

“Twitter provides a great man-on-the-street account of what’s happening right now. The minute the Los Angeles earthquake struck [in July 2008] there was an update on Twitter, which was followed by thousands of more updates, until nine minutes later the first reports came out on the AP wire,” he says. “Twitter is very good at immediacy.”

LA rail spokesperson steps down, WSJ reports

Posted September 15, 2008

A spokeswoman for Los Angeles’ commuter rail, Metrolink, has reportedly after issuing comments that the engineer of the train that crashed into a freight car last Friday, killing 25, failed to stop for a red light. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), which has taken over the investigation, told the Metrolink Board that the comments were “premature” and ordered it to withhold further comments.

The Wall Street Journal reported that the spokeswoman said the statement “was and is accurate.”
