CNN’s comedy show breaks hard news

Posted October 24, 2008

When PRWeek asked experts the reasons why serious news sources are bolstering their offerings with comedy, a few answers stuck out: increasing consumer distrust of media, comic relief for viewers, and the public’s demand for commentary.

Yet at the October 23 taping of the premiere of CNN’s DL Hughley Breaks the News, the show broke some hard news of its own. Former White House press secretary Scott McClellan endorsed the presidential bid of Sen. Barack Obama, becoming the second former Bush administration official to do so in one week, following former Secretary of State Colin Powell.

McClellan disclosure tour not over yet

Posted July 29, 2008

Former White House press secretary turned best selling author Scott McClellan set off another round of outrage when he told Hardball host Chris Matthews that part of the Bush Administration’s messaging strategy during his tenure was the funneling of favorable talking points to friendly TV commentators, naming Sean Hannity and Bill O’Reilly.

McClellan qualified the statement, reported by TVNewswer, by saying, “I think that happens both ways when people go on other networks that are favorable to Democrats.”

MSNBC host Keith Olbermann expressed shock – shock! – at the tactic, while O’Reilly, with typical meekness, called McClellan “idiot,” adding, “He wants to sell his stupid book.”

McClellan, Rather chat on pro-war marketing

Posted June 6, 2008

Former White House press secretary Scott McClellan chatted with former CBS anchor Dan Rather June 4 at the 92nd St. Y in New York. The political world’s latest author-at-the-center-of-attention mentioned a few interesting tidbits about his role as press at the White House, and the way the executive branch’s staff manipulated the media in the run-up to the Iraq War, and his own personal experiences working in the Bush Administration. Silver Anvils honor industry best

Posted June 6, 2008

At last night’s Silver Anvil Awards, Jeffrey Julin, 2008 PRSA chair and CEO, started the ceremony by acknowledging the misfortune of Scott McClellan being perceived as a PR paradigm, when the audience and award winners were the real exemplars of the industry. The ceremony honored PR professionals that wove contemporary issues into organizational platforms, from the City of San Diego, who was recognized for its efforts during the city’s wildfire evacuation to the integrated communications that were created for Little Caesars Veterans Program. These programs also received the distinction of being added to a PRSA database, for future PR professionals to learn what the profession is truly about.

Much ado about McClellan’s memoir

Posted June 2, 2008

Checking in with PR and public affairs professionals around town, I find that the new Scott McClellan tell-all (or tell-some) book about his days as Bush administration press secretary is generating a lot of interest. But does it mean much in the long run? We’ll see.

One former member of the Clinton administration suggested its contents aren’t necessarily anything new – that people already knew the Bush administration used faulty intelligence to argue for the Iraq war; that Rove and Cheney shaded the truth about what they knew or revealed about Valerie Plame’s job with the CIA; etc. Read more »

McClellan answers readers questions…

Posted May 30, 2008

at the Washington Post.

Among many interesting comments:

Washington: Mr. McClellan, having been in the position of defending the White House from past officials writing their own books, how do you feel about comments you made previously regarding such tell-alls? How do you respond to criticisms that you might have left your job rather than defend the administration’s positions, if you felt moral qualms about doing so? Very much looking forward to reading your book — I feel there is a lot to be said about the administration, and your book may be a key piece in moving this exploration forward.

Scott McClellan: I got caught up in the permanent campaign culture just like so many others do all too often in today’s poisonous Washington environment. It has become the accepted way of doing things, and I believe excessively embraced. Richard Clarke is someone I criticized from the podium. I actually saw him last night in New York and expressed my regret for the way I handled that situation.

McClellan nonsense

Posted May 30, 2008

That the PRSA should censure or rebuke Scott McClellan for his about-face regarding the Bush Administration has gotten . Which is ridiculous. Unless McClellan is an active member, which I highly doubt, why would this be its purview? Anyone have an answer?
