Yahoo’s comms restructuring being “fleshed out”

Posted March 4, 2009

According to Brad Williams, VP of corporate communications at Yahoo, the company’s corporate communications team hasn’t been impacted by the massive restructuring - yet. “But we’re working [with] incoming CMO, Elisa Steele, to determine how to best align our team to Yahoo’s new organizational structure as it’s fleshed out in the coming weeks,” said Williams, who is acting as head of the company’s corporate communications team since Jill Nash’s departure.

Bartz uses Yahoo blog to explain management changes

Posted February 26, 2009

Carol Bartz, Yahoo’s CEO since January, reached out to consumers via the company blog today, shortly after it disclosed that Blake Jorgensen, CFO, will exit as soon as his replacement is found.

“Today I’m rolling out a new management structure that I believe will make Yahoo a lot faster on its feet,” she blogged. “For us working at Yahoo, it means everything gets simpler. We’ll be able to make speedier decisions, the notorious silos are gone, and we have a renewed focus on the customer.”

More to come…

Yahoo departure fuels more speculation

Posted February 24, 2009

The head of Yahoo’s news and information division, Neeraj Khemlani, has jumped ship from the troubled company to Hearst Corp. The move has fueled even more speculation that Yahoo’s rumored reorganization could happen as early as tomorrow.  According to a Hearst , Khemlani will be VP and special assistant to the CEO and be “responsible for promoting and coordinating digital content transformation across the company.” Stay tuned for more on Yahoo’s restructuring.

Yahoo on eve of reorganization?

Posted February 23, 2009

A reorganization of management is expected at Yahoo in the coming weeks, reports All Things D. Swisher writes:

…most expect [CEO Carol] Bartz to do a C-level-style set-up, with execs like a COO, CTO and a new, more powerful CMO (who will also head PR), all reporting to her.

In addition, several suggested she might also junk a recent reorg that split the world into four regions. Instead, one exec could head the U.S., where most of Yahoo’s current business is, and one head international efforts.

Yahoo’s head of PR departed the company earlier this month.

Bartz named new Yahoo CEO

Posted January 13, 2009

Yahoo has Carol Bartz its new CEO. According to the Associated Press, Bartz is a “no-nonsense leader” and self-described “straight-shooter.” Bartz, 60, is joining Yahoo from Autodesk, where she was executive chairman of the board after a long tenure as the company’s CEO.

Bartz could usher in an interesting communications style for the company. The AP reports during today’s press conference, Bartz told analysts she intended to ensure Yahoo gets “some friggin’ breathing room” so the company can “kick some butt.”

Last November Brad Williams, VP of corporate commuications at Yahoo, told PRWeek the company would evolve its messaging strategy once Yang’s successor was named. Stay tuned for more.

Yang’s messages carry on

Posted November 20, 2008

Even though Jerry Yang is gone, the messages he put into place at Yahoo aren’t, according to Brad Williams, VP of corporate communications at Yahoo. “We’re focused on moving the business forward,” Williams told PRWeek.

Yang’s three strategic initiatives will still mold much of the company’s messaging, he added. Those include, making the troubled company a starting point for more users; opening the platform for more innovation; and driving interest from advertisers.

“That is not changing,” he noted. “It may at some point in the future but not now.”

Yahoo still figuring out layoffs

Posted October 23, 2008

Brad Williams, VP of corporate communications at Yahoo, said it’s too soon to know how the communications team at Yahoo will be affected by upcoming layoffs. Earlier this week, the company reported a 64% drop in net income and confirmed that at least 1,430 employees will be losing their jobs in 2008.

“We haven’t made any decisions yet about which areas across the company are going to be impacted,” Williams told PRWeek. “At a corporate level we haven’t communicated any decisions about where those cost-reductions will be made. But certainly corporate communications is a part of the company and therefore we’re participating in the top-to-bottom business review that’s going on.” Read more »

Both Yahoo and Google have felt the need to clear up public misinformation about their non-exclusive search and search advertising , announced in June.

Yahoo launched to explain the fine print of the deal to consumers, while Google added a slideshow and fact page .

Yahoo corporate communications spokesman Adam  Grossman Grossberg told PRWeek that the company has received positive feedback, but launched the site to correct misconceptions.

“One of the reasons the site was created was to give Yahoo a public forum to clarify what the agreement is, and just as importantly – what it is not,” he said via e-mail. “While we have not received any negative consumer feedback, there has been confusion in the marketplace about our services agreement with Google, which we believe is largely based on misinformation.”

Dan Martin, Google global communications and public affairs spokesman, said that his company would not comment on the effort.
