NIRI’s corporate Web site suggestions

As we’ve reported here and here, change is afoot in the ways in which public companies can use their Web sites for material information. The most recent Executive Alert from the National Investor Relations Institute (NIRI) has some suggestions for corporate Web site do’s and don’ts based on a review of IR Web sites for the 100 largest publicly traded companies. NIRI conducted the survey this summer. Here are a couple of its key points:

If linking to external resources (i.e. call transcripts, stock charts, etc.), be sure to identify them as outside the corporate site.

Use common names for standard pieces of information in order to make them more easily identifiable to users.

Carefully consider requiring users to register for certain aspects of IR sites as this may dissuade users from accessing these areas or avoid the site altogether.
