The Cycle

Meredith and Comcast partner for Video On Demand

Meredith and Comcast are joining together to launch a family-focused Video On Demand, scheduled to roll out in December.

Titled “Parents TV,” the multi-channel platform will encompass every stage of parenthood–”from conception to college”– and will be accessible for free to all of Comcast’s digital subscribers, a hefty 14 million customers.
Six separate Parents TV channels will first be launched, with original content produced by Meredith Video Solutions, an in-house department. Parents TV also has the benefit of leveraging expertise from Meredith titles like Family Circle, American Baby and Parents.

The company already has two Web channels: Parents.tv (Parents TV’s online component) and Better.tv.

Comcast senior vice president of new media Matt Strauss said tapping Meredith’s parenting expertise was a big draw for the cable giant. “Families with young children will be able to access original content from the team of parenting experts at Meredith. Most important, it will be available whenever they need it.”

Success of magazines such as Better Homes and Gardens may call for more cable VOD channels in the near future–in particular, to complement the broadcast program Better.TV, which launched in the spring.
