Coke wants to recycle everything

As part of its first major US green initiative, Coca-Cola has announced it will be investing more than $60 million to build the world’s largest plastic-bottle-to-bottle recycling plant and support recycling in the US. In a issued today, the company has also announced its ambitious goal of recycling or reusing 100% of its PET (polyethylene terephthalate) plastic bottles in the US.

Coke said it will team with United Resource Recovery Corporation (URRC) to build the recycling plant in Spartanburg, SC. The company said the “plant will produce approximately 100 million pounds of food-grade recycled PET plastic for reuse each year – the equivalent of producing nearly two billion 20-ounce Coca-Cola bottles.”

The 30-acre plant is expected to open in 2008 and be fully functional by 2009. Coke has invested in recycling facilities in Switzerland, Mexico, Austria and the Philippines as well.
