Dunkin’ Donuts reacts to media storm over Ray’s scarf

Dunkin’ Donuts pulled its ads featuring the perpetually perky Rachael Ray wearing a scarf that looks like a keffiyeh, a traditional headdress worn by Arab men. After bloggers and members of the media commented on the scarf’s similarities to the trademark symbol of Yasser Arafat, the company responded and eventually pulled the ad.

“In a recent online ad, Rachael Ray is wearing a black-and-white silk scarf with a paisley design,” the company said in a statement released online on May 23. “It was selected by the stylist for the advertising shoot. Absolutely no symbolism was intended. However, as of this past weekend, we are no longer using the online ad because the possibility of misperception detracted from its original intention to promote our iced coffee.”

The ad was pulled on May 24 and the company has since been reacting to media with the provided statement. Ray’s publicist, Charlie Dougiello, has been quoted in several media outlets saying this issue has been blown out of proportion and is a “nonstory.”
