A group of parents, child safety advocates, and activists protested in front of the West 57th St headquarters of Kohlberg, Kravis, Roberts & Company in New York City yesterday in hopes of getting the equity firm, which owns part of Toys “R” Us, to adopt a stricter code of conduct for its suppliers to ensure that more toys tainted with lead paint do not wind up on store shelves.

Most of them held signs reading “Toys R Toxic.” “We are here to demand corporate accountability and corporate responsibility,” said Emily McKhann, of the group MomsRising, whose goal is to promote a more family-friendly America. “Profit should not come before the safety of our children.”

The group has also launched another Web site called Toxicplayroom.org to provide more information about its efforts as well as the recalls.
