Burger King to tout healthier foods to kids

Burger King said today it will join the Council of Better Business Bureaus’ Children’s Food and Beverage Advertising Initiative and begin emphasizing healthier foods in its advertisements aimed at kids younger than 12. In a press release issued today the country’s second largest hamburger chain said it will only promote meals to kids that contain no more than 560 calories, less than 30% of calories from fat, no trans fats, less than 10% of calories from saturated fat, and no more than 10% of calories from added sugars.

The company also said it will not advertise in elementary schools, restrict advertising to children under 12 that uses third-party licensed characters to Kids Meals that meet its nutrition guidelines, and promote Kids Meals that meet its Nutrition Guidelines on its Web site. Burger King joins 11 other major food and beverage companies who have pledged to promote healthier products to kids under the age of 12. We covered that decision earlier this year.

USA Today is also reporting that Burger King could begin offering apple slices cut to look like french fries and will be served in a french fry-style cup. The company will test the product this fall and winter. The paper is also reporting Burger King plans to sell and market flame-broiled Chicken Tenders.
