Mets fans fight to keep the big apple alive

Amid everything involved with the New York Mets building a new stadium, there’s one small detail that may have been overlooked, if not for the grassroots efforts by two New Yorkers: the apple that pops up after every Mets home run.

Lonnie Klein and Andrew Perlgut want the apple installed in the new Citi Field and to serve its same function. They’ve gathered some 4,600 signatures on a petition to the Mets, which states, “We don’t need any crazy gimmicks, shiny apples, bright lights, just a large red Apple coming out of a top hat. The same Apple that has come out of the same top hat for generations of Mets fans.”

And their effort has caught the attention of The New York Times.

Mets EVP of business operations Dave Howard told the Times the team is “considering various possibilities to have it on display for our fans at Citi Field” – no guarantee that the apple will resurface at the new stadium.

Interestingly, the apple was created in 1980 as part of a marketing campaign called “The Magic is Back.” “We had to do anything and everything to get the attention of baseball fans in New York,” Joe Donohue, director of promotions for the Mets in 1980, told neighborhood newspaper Downtown Express.

Hence, the apple pops out of a magician’s hat.
